Bending Strength Evaluation of Glulam Beams Made from Selected Nigerian Wood Species

Bending strength, was assessed in glued laminated beams made from local wood species bonded with phenol resorcinol formaldehyde, polyurethane and urea-formaldehyde adhesives. The 3- point loading used as the basis of bending strength assessment along directions parallel perpendicular to glue line. load orientation line offered higher strength. Furthermore, characteristic values obtained were 35.16 N/mm2, 40.79 47.34 60 67 N/mm2 for Afara, Akomu, Gmelina, Iroko, Omocedar species. These are similar given EN 1194-1999 glulam beams. Consequently, findings study beneficial architects structural engineers exploring dimensional, architectural flexibility affords both beam column design holds potential creating an industrial hub enhancing value chain around engineered allied industries.
